7 Tips For A Successful Maternity Portrait Session

Preparing For Your Maternity Session

Congratulations! These fond memories of motherhood begin before the birth while you’re still feeling refreshed, beautiful and excited about the joy of your new arrival!  This is the beginning of the new life growing inside you; your body as one with your unborn child.  An experience we are blessed with for a very short time in our lives.

This is a moment in your life you will treasure forever.  You’ll always remember hearing your baby’s first heartbeat, the first kick, or the tiny little hiccups.  But will you remember the beautiful baby bump or how gorgeous you looked?  Maternity photographs are personal and a change in our body we should capture and enjoy!

The MOST important thing to consider is your photographer.  Be sure to choose and invest in someone you feel comfortable with and also love their work.  It’s the photographer’s job to direct and pose you in the most flattering ways so that you can relax and have fun.  Alycia has been photographing mommy’s-to-be for 15 years and bellies and babies is her specialty.

To have the best possible session, we’ve put together SEVEN helpful tips to help you prepare for your maternity session.

  1. When to Schedule?

For the perfect maternity session, we recommend scheduling between 28 and 36 weeks.  By this time you will have a nice round belly, but still be comfortable moving around.  Partners and kiddos (if there are any) – pets too- are always welcome too!   If there are no children in the shoot, the time of day isn’t crucial.  If there are other young children who will be in the session it is important to work around their schedule and a morning appointment is best.

  1. What Kind Of Session Do You Want?

What do you envision for your maternity session? Studio? On location? Of course, weather and time of year is also a large factor in this decision.  If the weather is nice, we have lots of great locations we can recommend.  When considering an outdoor session, also think about how much “belly” and skin you want to be showing and if you will be comfortable doing this in a public location.

Also think about where will you display your portraits? Will they be for the wall? A baby book? An album? For a family room? Or your bedroom? This will also help you decide on clothing and posing choices.

  1. Choosing Your Clothing

To prepare for your maternity session, we recommend looking through our maternity gallery for some posing and clothing ideas you like.  How much “skin” do you want to show?  Belly only?  Topless?  Totally Nude?  If dad is coming, is he going shirtless?  We will always photograph a nice variety of poses for you to choose from.  Some will be more suitable for a family room, while others may be more private and intimate.  The style you choose is entirely up to you.  These portraits are for you.  It’s important that you feel as comfortable as possible.

For clothing, dark pants and shirts are a good place to start (this includes for “dad” too).  From there, we have lots of fabrics, tube tops and dresses available at the studio for you to use during your session.  Feel free to bring your entire “closet” (okay, not really… but if you are unsure, the more choices the better!).  Lingerie is always fun too, if you are feeling up to it! Shoes aren’t really important unless you are doing something sassy with some heels.  Don’t worry, we won’t make you stay in them for long!

If there are other people in the session, be sure to coordinate outfits.  This doesn’t mean you have to totally “match”, but go well together.  You can check out our clothing Pinterest board for some ideas.  Be sure to try things on before you arrive to make sure they fit the way you’d like.

Some clothes in your closet may not be maternity, but may also work great for our session.  If you can still fit in them, some women like to bring a pair of their non maternity jeans (these of course won’t button, but make for a fun shot!)  Other fun things to bring are form fitting dresses, scarves, jewelry, and oversized “hubby” shirts.

Here’s a few websites we like for some nice maternity dresses and lingerie:

  1. Undergarments

Clothing can “dig in” and cause marks on your skin.  Be sure to either wear a strapless bra or slide your straps off your shoulders to avoid the markings and also leave any waist bands off of your belly and push them down by your hips.

Be sure to bring a skimpy, nude (thong, if you have it) pair of underwear to be able to wrap and tuck fabrics into.

  1. Personal “Props”

Personal items can make great “props” that will personalize your session.  Sentimental items can include sonogram pictures, a special gift for baby, something from baby’s nursery, any toy or stuffed animal from your own childhood, alphabet blocks to spell baby’s name or any clothes or booties for baby.

  1. Pamper Yourself!

The maternity session is meant to be fun and relaxing. We are creating beautiful heirlooms to remember this exciting time while you are waiting for your new little person.  Make sure to schedule your session on a day when you don’t have to work or have any other appointments.  Be sure to eat before your session and we have plenty of water!

Mom’s and Dad’s hands will both be shown in many of the close up photographs. Please make sure your nails look nice!  Also, be sure to bring your favorite lotion with you to make sure we don’t have any dry elbows or bellies.

We also offer professional hair and make-up services with one of our amazing MUAH’s.  In addition to just being plain fun to be pampered and beautiful, it truly makes a difference in the final portraits!  Let us know if you would like to add this service and we will get it all set up for you.  Then when we are all done, you can wrap up your amazing day and go out for a night on the town all glammed up!
